G-NAF®
The G-NAF®
(Geocoded National Address File) is Australia’s first authoritative geocoded
address index for the whole country, listing all valid physical addresses in
Australia. It contains approximately 12.6 million physical addresses, each
linked to its unique geocoded (specific latitude and longitude of the address).
Collaborators on G-NAF include the mapping agencies and
land registries of the State, Territory and
Commonwealth Governments, Australia Post, the Electoral Council of Australia
and the Australian Electoral Commission. The processt
condenses about 33 million addresses from a variety of sources around
Australia to the 12.6 million by removing duplications,
errors and by identifying alias, fraudulent and vanity addresses.
G-NAF®
is a single, national authoritative source for:
- validating
customer-provided address (assisting in fraud prevention)
- identifying the
geocode for spatial analysis (creating maps to plot and analyse services and
customer locations)
- assembling and
maintaining large address files (reducing duplications and costs, increasing
efficiency and improving mail delivery).
The G-NAF is
delivered from PSMA Australia as a highly normalised data model that
includes a number of data tables and a series of associated look-up tables.
This structure is not suitable for immediate use within GIS products that
expect vendor specific geometry structure.
NAVIGATE has taken
the complex structure of the G-NAF and generated a single table that
contains all the necessary address details and is in a suitable format for
use as reference data with many GIS products. This table is derived by
querying the numerous G-NAF tables and adding a geometry from the longitude
and latitude values.
